our story

Skyland Baptist Church is an autonomous Southern Baptist Church established June 2, 1963. We partner with both Tuscaloosa County Baptists and Alabama Baptists to reach our city and state for Jesus.

Our church was planted as a mission of Calvary Baptist Church. Over the years, Skyland Baptist Church has had only three senior pastors: Jerome Robinson (1963-1989), Jimmy Garner (1989-2016), and Jon Wiggins (2016-Present).

At Skyland Baptist, we partner with the greatest missions sending organization in the world: the IMB. We believe it is our responsibility to go, send, and give until all people have been reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

what is the gospel?

The gospel is summed up in the doing, dying, and rising of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a sinless life in perfect obedience to the Father. He then took the punishment we deserved at the cross, dying in our place as the perfect sacrifice for sin.

Finally, he rose in powerful victory of sin and death.

We believe the gospel proclaimed from the scriptures changes people: it resurrects hearts, removes idolatry, and restores lives. Families are restored, neighborhoods are renewed, and whole cities are transformed by its power. Thus, we will preach the gospel. We will counsel with the gospel. We will celebrate the gospel in song. We will remember the gospel by partaking in the Lord's Supper. We will learn to live in light of the gospel in every sphere of life. From our personal lives, to our homes, to our neighborhoods, to the schools and vocations we take in this city, to the ends of the earth; this community in word and deed will proclaim the gospel.

our beliefs

The Bible is the inspired, inerrant and authoritative Word of God for Christian faith and living.

(The Bible) - John 17:17; 2 Tim. 3:15-17; Heb. 4:12; 1 Pet. 1:23-25; 2 Pet. 1:20-21

That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

(The Trinity) - Matt. 28:19; John 10:30-33, 15:26; Rom. 8:9; Col. 1:15, 2:9; Heb. 1:2-3

He reigns with providential care over the universe with all power, all wisdom, and all love.

(God the Father) - Genesis 1:1; Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 64:8; Ephesians 4:6; Colossians 1:17; 1 Timothy 1:17

In the deity and humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and His personal return in power and glory.  (God the Son) - Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John; Heb. 4:15, 9:26-28; 1 Pet. 2:22; Rom. 3:21-26; Acts 7:56; Col. 3:1; 1 Cor. 15; Acts 1:11

In the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling every Christian is able to live a godly life.

(The Holy Spirit) - John; Acts 1:8; Rom. 8:1-17; Gal. 5:16-251 Thess. 5:15-17

That all people are lost sinners and must be regenerated by the Holy Spirit, believe in the gospel (see below) and turn to Christ in saving faith. Thus, salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

(Salvation) - John 3:3-8, 16-21; Acts 4:12; Rom. 3:21-26, 6:23; Eph. 2:1-10

Both believers and unbelievers will after death have eternal destinies: those believing to eternal life with Christ and those unbelieving to eternal punishment in hell.

(Eternal Dwelling) - Matt. 25; John 6:40; 1 Cor. 15; Rev. 20:11-15
